Material for meeting 6

Activities laid out in room 1/2 at this meeting:

• Pattern blocks, and also pattern block stickers
• Tangram puzzles
• skip counting mazes
• fractals - two versions of making Pythagoras fractal tree -
  • either from squares of paper - see e.g., this web page
  • or from A4 paper, as in these instructions, except slightly modified so the tree can be built as a stand alone tree, not stuck to any backing, only gluing each new set of branches to the tree itself. This means you're not limited by the size of the paper it would be stuck to.
• Compass constructions -
  • some of these are taken from the book "this is not a maths book" by Anna Weltman
    (I'd not seen this book until very recently, but it turns out to have a lot of the art/craft maths activities we've covered alread in the meetings, so I can highly recommend it!)
  • Here is a pdf file with instructions for drawing the cardioid, and various circle pictures to colour in, or count the circles, etc.
  • here is some triangle grid paper, to use for drawing circle patterns - put circles with centres where the lines intersect to get a flower picture
  • There were some sheets with other compass construtions

• Liverpool maths road show problems, as listed below
• A lot of 2 x 2 x 2 rubic's cubes. At a future meeting we will talk about how to do these. Also a 2 x 2 x 1 rubics cube
• Puzzle about putting together 6 pyramids

Marco's sessions in room3:

• younger group: skip counting mazes, dominoes, but instead of matching up numbers which are the same, you have to put together the "number bonds" - i.e., put a number next to another so they add up to 10. We got our set of dominoes for just one pound at the We used some paint to add dots so they have numbers between 1 and 9.
• older group: logic puzzles about seating order, etc
